Kota Kinabalu
For a week we made Kota Kinabalu our base from which we made daytrips to marine and wild life parks. We really enjoyed the slow and laid back pace of the city. It felt more like a smalltown than a state capital.
Kota Kinabalu offers a large variety of markets, from the Gaya Street Sunday Market to the Filipino Market, whether it is street food, salted fish or handicraft, I am sure that you will find a market that suits your needs.
Also being a port city there is no shortage of fresh seafood. But be aware that not all restaurants have the intention to serve you a decent meal. Some are just your regular tourist trap.
What a great series of photos! Really enjoy the unflinching views of reality, it’s so refreshing. Bonus that they’re aesthetic, too. 🙂

Thank you! Yeah, it is a great challenge to capture the reality as it truly is, which is also weird since we live in it 24/7.

True, but I myself live where there’s low population density and lots of wild natural world, and I don’t normally see scenes like the crowded alley with all the stacked balconies, which is my favourite photo in that series.

One of the advantages of being a traveling photographer is that you see things in a different perspective than the ones living in the places you visit. When I saw that alley, I just had to take a picture. I had never seen something like that. For those living there it was just everyday life, nothing special.
That also goes the other way around. Back home in Sweden, in my hometown, It is really hard to evaluate what scene would make a good photo, because I’m so used to the scenery.

So true! Ever since I started blogging I am finding myself re-examining how I see my own home, and what I don’t notice but others around the world might find interesting. I guess we’re all taking part in this big experiment called the Global Community. 🙂

That tailor with the long hair – he was there when I was at the Filipino Market area in May 2014 🙂

Haha. He is also seen on google streetview, wearing a white shirt.

So what’s after Malaysia? Are you going back to Asia for more photo adventures in the future?

For now I have a steady job here in Sweden, so in the nearest future there will be shorter trips. Definitely to Southeast Asia. 🙂
