Jonker Walk Night Market

In this last post about Malacca we will be focusing on Jonker Street, or Jonker Walk as it is called. It is the centre street of the historical Chinatown, which is part of the Malacca world heritage site. The street was once famous for its many antique shops, but nowadays these shops are in numbers surpassed by clothing shops, crafts shops and restaurants. During the weekends there is a night market, and also some entertainment on a stage located where Jonker Street and Tukang Emas Street converge. The night market is really busy and there is a lot going on, but food-wise it is a bit limited since there are a lot of stalls selling plastic toys and TV-shop gadgets. The food on offering is mostly different types of snacks, which will perfectly suffice for someone on a food quest. These nights the proper food deals goes down in the alley intersection between Jonker Street and Tukang Emas Street, which I posted about here.

  1. Love your photos. ❤ After studying overseas for five years, I am still proud to call myself a Malaysian because you simply can't find such cultural diversity and vibrancy in other countries.

  3. Malacca old town is a great city. I did enjoy my visit there. Unfortunately it was a day trip, so I couldn’t explore the Jonker Street. Would like to be there again, and stay for a couple days. Nice photoblog anyway ,,, the picture are great 🙂

  4. Beautiful photo series. I am a huge fan of outdoor markets like this, and I haven’t been to nearly enough of them. Unfortunately they aren’t exactly a huge deal in most of middle America. Making it to a huge open air market like this is on my bucket list. Someday.

  5. Wonderful photos! I stumbled across your blog because of the Jonker Street (my family name but spelled with a J). It was wonderful to see pictures of places that I have been too as a teenager growing up in Singapore, but I have never been to Malacca. Your pictures have put this place on my list of places too see. Thanks so much for sharing with everyone.

  6. My family used to take road trips down to Malaysia when I was younger, but I’ve never really paid attention to the details of the place. Your pictures has shown me how much I’ve taken this beautiful place for granted. Thanks for the pictures once again:)
